"Trumpeter Imogen WHITEHEAD soared like a seraph..." The Times

”splendidly sonorous” The telegraph

Imogen Whitehead is Principal Trumpet with Britten Sinfonia - the first woman in two decades to gain a trumpet position in any UK orchestra. She also performs as guest Principal Trumpet with the London Symphony Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, amongst others.

As a soloist, Imogen has premiered numerous works including Stephen Dodgson’s Trumpet Concerto and Trinculo by Sally Beamish, commissioned for her by the Park Lane Group. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Imogen studied privately with renowned Norwegian soloist Tine Thing Helseth thanks to funding from the Royal Philharmonic Society.

In 2022 Imogen made her international recital debut in France and recorded Barry Mills’ concerto for trumpet and flugelhorn with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra. Imogen’s future solo engagements include a recital at the Romsey Chamber Music Festival (June) and performances at St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Wimbledon International Music Festival (November). In May Imogen will also join leading brass ensemble Septura on their tour to Colombia.

Imogen is a particular champion of the flugelhorn - an oft-overlooked member of the brass family - and is committed to raising its profile as a classical solo instrument through new commissions and arrangements. Her latest commission is a piece for solo flugelhorn by Charlotte Harding, funded by the Vaughan Williams Foundation, which will receive its be premiere in June 2024.

Imogen is a regular deputy for Les Misérables in the West-End and has played on major film soundtracks including Maestro and Saltburn. She is also an Associate Performer for GALSI (‘Gender and the Large and Shiny Instruments’ - an initiative promoting gender equality in brass and percussion) and a member of the International Trumpet Guild’s ‘New Works’ committee.

Aside from trumpet playing, Imogen enjoys running, brush-lettering and learning Spanish. She lives in South-West London with her husband Rupert, a trombonist in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
