Wimbledon International Music Festival: Jackson Flugelhorn Concerto

  • Auditorium, Wimbledon High School, SW19 4AB (map)

Programme:
Anna Clyne – Sound and Fury
Gabriel Jackson – Hargrove (London Premiere)
Mendelssohn – Symphony No. 3, ‘Scottish’

Sinfonia Smith Square (formerly Southbank Sinfonia)
Imogen Whitehead, flugelhorn
Charlotte Corderoy, conductor

Formerly known as Southbank Sinfonia, this trailblazing orchestra of young professionals found its new name after merging with St John’s Smith Square (now Smith Square Hall). They are joined by Imogen Whitehead, principal trumpet of the Britten Sinfonia and a fast-rising soloist, in a brand new concerto for flugelhorn – the trumpet’s mellower cousin – by Gabriel Jackson, dedicated to jazz legend Roy Hargrove. Conductor Charlotte Cordery was Critics’ Circle Conductor of the Year, 2025 and has recently worked with the LSO, Philharmonia, Opéra National de Lyon and Opera Holland Park. She directs the orchestra in a programme including Mendelssohn’s windswept and dramatic Scottish Symphony and the virtuosic orchestral showpiece Sound and Fury by Anna Clyne, described as a ‘composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods’ by the New York Times.
