World Premiere: Anibal Vidal’s Trumpet Concerto

On Saturday 2nd November I gave the world premiere performance of Anibal Vidal’s trumpet concerto, Invocación n.2: A Kintsugi Resurrection. Anibal is one of three composers receiving mentorship this year from Britten Sinfonia’s composer development scheme, ‘Magnum Opus’. The orchestra was conducted by Tom Fetherstonhaugh and we performed to a packed audience at St Giles Cripplegate. Anibal’s piece took inspiration from Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto and the final movement of Mahler’s Symphony No.2. This quirky, playful concerto - which had me buzzing through a plastic air pump hose at one point! - is a brilliant companion piece to the Haydn, and I hope to record and perform it again soon. Aurora Orchestra: Firebird & Bolero from memory

In October I was invited to be guest Principal Trumpet with Aurora Orchestra for a tour of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Ravel’s Bolero from memory. We gave concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Snape Maltings and Drumsheds before travelling to Switzerland to perform in Zurich, Geneva and Bern. This was a trumpet-tastic project (with Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major and Outi Tarkiainen’s Ring of Fire and Love also in the programme), and the high-risk, high-reward nature of playing with Aurora is a thrill like no other! LSO - Asia Tour

In mid-September I travelled to Asia with the London Symphony Orchestra for a three-week tour around Japan, South Korea and China with Antonio Pappano and Yuja Wang. It was an incredible trip, full of great music, delicious food and wonderful people. Our busiest place of travel was Japan, where we took flights and bullet trains to perform in Fukuoka, Osaka, Tokyo and Sapporo. In Seoul we had the luxury of staying in one hotel for a week whilst performing in five beautiful venues around the city, and in Shanghai we performed three different programmes on consecutive nights at the Oriental Art Center. This was my longest tour to date and provided a fantastic end to an intensive seven-week patch with the orchestra.

Upcoming Concerts

Artist-in-Residence -
St Martin’s Voices

I am delighted to announce that I have been appointed Artist-in-Residence with St Martin’s Voices for the 2024/25 Season. During the year I’ll be performing in three choral concerts alongside SMV and in three instrumental concerts as a soloist. Two of these concerts are coming up in the next two weeks: on Tuesday 12th November I’ll be playing works by Sally Beamish, Barry Mills, Geoffrey Burgon and John Rutter in a Remembrance concert with St Martin’s Voices. On Saturday 23rd November, I will be performing Trumpet Concertos by Joseph Haydn and Stephen Dodgson alongside the St Martin’s Chamber Ensemble. Christmas with Septura

In December I will be joining leading brass ensemble Septura for their Christmas concerts in Newcastle and Nottingham. We’ll be performing festive works by J.S. Bach, Brahms and Humperdinck as well as the group’s ingenious arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, narrated by Zeb Soanes.

Solo Recording: An Update

After a very busy few months, I have been enjoying a week of rest at home. Next week, however, I’ll be back to work and am looking forward to visiting the team at World of Sound in Wellingborough to edit our recordings from the summer. We’ll be working on seven pieces, recorded across two sessions (with pianist Jennifer Walsh and Britten Sinfonia) and I can’t wait to see, hear and share the results. These recordings will be released on YouTube and audio streaming platforms in early 2025.
