Upstairs at Ronnie’s

In just over 4 weeks’ time - on Monday 27th July - I will be making my recital debut at Ronnie Scott’s, alongside pianist Patrick Milne. There are still some tickets available for our two shows (6.20pm & 9pm) and you can enjoy ordering food and drinks during the performance. I went to a show there myself a couple of weeks ago and I was blown away by the stunning new ‘Upstairs’ space. Our programme has a great mix of brand new music and more familiar classics, so there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Gabriel Jackson - Flugelhorn Concerto

This year’s Ryedale Festival is fast approaching and I’m hugely looking forward to my solo residency there. This week I met up with composer Gabriel Jackson and conductor Charlotte Corderoy to play through Gabriel’s new flugelhorn concerto, Hargrove, which I’ll be premiering with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday 18th July. It’s a beautiful piece - scored for flugelhorn, strings, harp and percussion - and an homage to the great jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Further performances will be at Presteigne Festival (August) and at the Wimbledon International Music Festival (November).

Songs of Love, Loss and Protest

In preparation for our recitals at Ryedale Festival, harpist Olivia Jageurs and I will be performing our programme ‘Songs of Love, Loss and Protest’ at the West Wimbledon Society (Avenue Hall, SW20 0PQ) on Sunday 5th July, 3pm. This one-hour concert will take the audience on a seamless journey from J.S. Bach to The Beatles, demonstrating the beautiful combination of trumpet/flugelhorn and harp. Tickets are £10 on the door (free for WWS Members) and post-concert refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you there!

Sally Beamish: Album Release

I’m delighted to feature in two pieces on Sally Beamish’s recently-released album ‘House of Wonder’ with Delphian Records. FirstPeace is a short fanfare for solo trumpet, and Crescent is a five-movement trio for piano, viola and trumpet (with pianist Joseph Havlat and Sally herself on viola). I was invited by Sally to perform at the album launch at Fidelio Cafe, and it feels particularly special to feature on this album after I recorded Sally’s piece ‘Trinculo’ (written for me in 2016) for my own album last year.

Back with Britten Sinfonia

It’s been brilliant to return to my position as Principal Trumpet of Britten Sinfonia after my maternity leave. For my first project back with the orchestra I was straight in at the deep end with the UK Premiere of James MacMillan’s ‘Angels Unawares’ at Cadogan Hall, with The Sixteen and Harry Christophers. Then, last week, we were at the Aldeburgh Festival in Snape Maltings for a performance of Britten’s Cello Symphony with soloist Laura van der Heijden. This concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 - click below to listen on BBC Sounds (and at 1:53:10 you’ll hear a duet between Laura and me!)
